Linda Hanson (Sandra Bullock) lebt ein sorgenfreies Leben als Hausfrau und Mutter von zwei bezaubernden Töchtern. Bis eines Tages ein Polizist klingelt und sie mit einer unfassbaren Nachricht konfrontiert: Ihr Ehemann Jim (Julian McMahon) sei bei einem Autounfall ums Leben gekommen. Wie in Trance verbringt Linda den Tag und schläft schließlich ein, um am nächsten Morgen den noch größeren Schock zu erleben: In der Küche sitzt Jim und trinkt seinen Kaffee, als wäre gar nichts geschehen.
